Ms Paige

Ashley Natasha Johnson

Ms Paige

On January 23, 1984 in Toronto, Canada, one of God’s most talented children made her first appearance on her very first stage, Planet Earth. Born Ashley Natasha “Paige” Johnson to 80’s and 90’s pop sensation Debbie Johnson (6-time Juno nominee), Ashley’s destiny was all but carved out with music encrypted in her DNA. Ashley’s daycare was her mom’s recording studio, her playground: a dressing room, and her favourite toy (you guessed it) a microphone. Stardom was her dream, and her voice was her gift. Already learning the piano by age 5, while her classmates were writing their ABC’s, Ashley was writing her first songs. Later when other children were watching Sesame Street, she started her professional career at age 10 with 3 recordings for Sesame Street and 3 recordings for Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki’s CD “Amazing Journey”. To further strengthen her musical foundation, Ashley also studied the flute, piccolo, violin, and saxophone and takes musical influence from a variety of artists such as: Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Tamia - (Soca) Edwin Yearwood, Alison Hinds, Machel Montano - (Latin) Selena, Huey Dunbar (DLG), Alejandro Sanz, Wisin y Yandel. The Opening Chapters Ashley’s roots are deeply planted in her native Trinidad, so her unique ability to caress your soul with her voice while her lyrics ignite your passion is because as Ms Paige, she marries R&B with the pulsating rhythm of the islands, treating her audience to an eclectic, spicy sound with each note she sings. In 2004, Ms Paige began fusing her love for R&B with the music of her heritage, soca and calypso. She united with three other artists from the Toronto soca scene to form the eclectic group, EleMental, consisting of band mates Freak Nasty, Suga Kane, and Diamond.

So, why the name Ms Paige?! The men of EleMental are behind the creation of the name, as they brainstormed to determine what her alias should be. Paige, being one of her middle names, was the winning vote by her band mates. With Janet Jackson as a great influence in her artistry, the saying began, "No my first name ain't baby, it's Ashley... Ms Paige if yuh nasty!"

The Plot Thickens
Her music is often thought of as a comparison of Alicia Keys meets Alison Hinds – a heated combination of R&B and soca. Her latest track "Man Fi Borrow" on the Red Bonez riddim (produced by Derek Brin & Garry Serrao) peaked at #2 on’s Top 20 Weekly Soca countdown in November 2009 and is being well received worldwide in Toronto, NY, Miami, the UK, Germany, and Barbados. She has worked with various producers throughout Toronto, New York, Trinidad, St. Lucia, and Grenada. Blessed with creativity, and the voice of a songbird, Ms Paige is determined to leave her mark in the music history books.

To date, she has performed in a number of shows, including Carnival In Yuh Backyard (a Toronto Caribana standard that is sold out to 15,000 attendees annually), the Rivoli nightclub, Trinidad & Tobago Independence Day celebrations, and various university culture shows at York University and the University of Windsor, as well as being a lead singer for St. Kitts Music Inc. Her breakout performances in 2009 include D’Enforcers 15th Anniversary Celebration in October 2009, and the sold-out extravaganza “Soca or Die 10” produced by the legendary soca DJ “Dr.Jay de Soca Prince”.

The Story still remains to be told....

Ms Paige has only begun her musical journey. And like a steamy romance novel, I am eagerly anticipating what happens with every turn of the page.
