Judging criteria

Traditional
Costumes that reflect past cultural traditions and folkloric themes, which are mythical and mysterious but are not factual.

Fun/Fantasy
Costumes that show artistic licence and can mean and be anything according to the designer.

Historical

Costumes that show the factual representations of past historical or cultural situations/issues and can be proven.

Modern/Contemporary
Costumes which shows a fusion of old ideas with modern ones and still convey recognisable themes.

Samba/Brazilian
Costumes and percussion band performance that reflect the fusion of varying styles of samba and song. The song tells the story of the theme. Subdivided into: i). Bateria (percussion band) with carnival costumes and float ii). Bateria only.

Eligibility for competition
The band size (small, medium or large) was based on the number of masqueraders passing in front of the judging point. Bands were required to register online to be considered for judging, but only 45 did so. Of those that did, many did not have enough masqueraders on the road at the judging point to be eligible for the competition.
