The Adinkra Carnival will return to Winneba, Ghana, on Saturday, 9 December. This year’s festivities promise more significant fanfare and diversity with the attendance of performing groups from all over the country and region.
Attendees can expect scheduled performances from troupes under masquerade, music, and dance genres. They will have the chance to visit numerous street parades and concerts held at central communal centres and spaces. Mas Africa, the main organiser of the carnival, will also host a photo-video contest with fantastic cash prizes for the best three finalists.
The Adinkra Carnival hopes to strengthen the connection between diasporic and global communities in Europe with Ghanaian creatives and artists. Staging the festival gives members of the Ghanaian diaspora a chance to both celebrate their culture and support the efforts of local creatives in preserving and transmitting it.
A slew of cultural awareness activities, such as discussion groups, exhibitions, and film screenings, will also be held during the carnival. One central theme of the celebrations is Ghana’s arts and culture and its survival, appropriation, preservation, and development.
Preceding the carnival will be the tenth International Conference on Carnival and Masquerade Arts. The gathering will attract academics, artists, and other attendees from the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, North America, South America, and Oceania. Carnival experts from the Notting Hill Carnival, Clary Salandy and Carl Gabriel, will be in attendance to host mas-making workshops—the two hope to impart invaluable creative and technical insights to young Ghanaian artists.
