Antigua Carnival is scheduled to take place this year, after a two-year pandemic hiatus, but with revised mas routes and ‘full cultural infusion’.
Michael Browne, the current Minister of Creative Industries, has said that despite plans to condense the carnival into seven days, revellers can be assured that the carnival will be remarkable. He added, “We are going to turn St John’s into a festival city for the seven days; we are working closely with the police to get that done.”
The ministry’s proposed program includes the usual T-Shirt Mas, Carnival Monday and Tuesday Mas, Calypso and Soca Monarch and Panorama competitions, all staged in adherence to safety protocols.
The Festivals Commission also intends to schedule other pre-Carnival events to include a formal gala to celebrate Sir McLean ‘King Short Shirt’ Emanuel’s 80th birthday, a teen rave, a battle of the bands, an adjusted Melting Pot concert and a car show.
The provisional carnival dates are from Wednesday 27 July until Tuesday 2 August 2022 wih the theme, ‘Experience Greatness – Again!’
