Barbados and Guyana introduce digital ID cards for regional travel

|

Released Date

Barbados and Guyana are moving to modernise their national identification systems as both countries roll out new digital ID cards to improve access to services and strengthen regional links.

In Barbados, the expansion of the Trident ID programme continues to form a major part of the island’s digital transformation push. The upgraded cards, which replace older laminated IDs, include enhanced security features and are designed to make everyday transactions smoother across public and private services.

Guyana is also advancing its electronic ID system following the implementation of its Digital Identity Card Act in March 2026. The biometric-based cards are expected to provide citizens with a secure, single form of identification while improving access to government services nationwide.

In a landmark development, both governments have confirmed that from 1 July 2026, citizens will be able to travel between Barbados and Guyana using national ID cards instead of passports, making movement between the two countries easier and more accessible.

The move is being seen as another practical step towards Caribbean integration, bringing the region closer through systems designed to benefit everyday people.
