It is no wonder that DJ Spice of TeamSoca intends to facilitate the inclusion of the soca music genre into the international music scene. In 2008, he embarked on a mission to, “Do something for the culture” by putting soca music on the globe – and has never looked back. The New York -based DJ has four decades of experience and has worked at major mainstream radio stations including, Power105FM, Hot 97, 105.9FM, WBLS in New York and now, Sirius XM Satellite Radio.
Spice is deploying not only his DJ-ing platform in achieving his goal, but also TeamSoca, a significant tool that has proven effective in bridging the gap between Caribbean nations. The channel employs game-changers from the soca industry including DJ Stephen, Walshy Fire, The Wassi One and DJ Puffy.
Spice said, “The DJs at TeamSoca are carefully selected and maintained, based on their quality and standard.” All DJs who work on this team have a personal studio assigned to them to encourage them to be able to deliver online, from the comfort of their personal space.
Another avenue is through the TeamSoca clothing line, which Spice described as, “Something we’ll be putting a lot of effort into. We see it as yet another tool when it comes to the promotion of ‘brand soca’. Our prints are conversation starters, and once that conversation gets started you become an ambassador of the culture.”
You will find DJ Spice on a music truck in Port of Spain this Carnival season, playing his best for the revellers in Paparazzi Carnival. He is also the owner of PiCH or People in Caribbean Heritage, a restaurant, bar and lounge in Brooklyn which was established to promote the Caribbean Diaspora.
