Luton takes the first step in achieving a green Community by 2040 through Carnival

|

Released Date

The 48th edition of Luton International Carnival is drawing near, and expectations are becoming palpable as the organisers promise to continue their culture of celebrating diversity, creativity, and togetherness for the entire community.

The Carnival organisers have garnered support, sponsorship, and funds from several stakeholders, including Luton Rising, which is their lead sponsor, alongside Luton Council, Luton BID, Step Forward Luton, TUI, Lidl, Amazon, PRS PPL, Tesco, BBC3 Counties, and BBC Radio1.

Revellers can expect highlights such as Step Forward Luton’s presentation of a Flamingo Storytelling session in Hat Gardens, the unveiling and naming of their new flamingo character in puppet form and an exclusive Luton-themed tale told by Taleshakers storytellers for children.

The family-friendly Carnival, which has taken on a sustainable and eco-friendly spin with the theme Luton Flying High, is going green for the first time since its inception. It will replace gas-guzzling vehicles and loud generators with a cool electric truck, e-cargo bikes, and push-and-pull floats powered by electric speakers.

The Chief Executive for Luton Council, Robin Porter, shared his experience with the events from the previous carnival celebration. At the same time, Councillor Javeria Hussain, Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of Luton Rising and Claudette Whittingham, Executive Director for the UK Centre for Carnival Arts, expressed how the green carnival initiative and the support gained from all the participating stakeholders, will go a long way to ensuring a legacy is created for future generations and equally strengthen their commitment to see Luton become a carbon-neutral town by 2040.

The Luton International Carnival 2024 promises to be an impressionable experience and is scheduled for Monday 27 May. More information on this year’s carnival can be found on their website.
