Notting Hill Carnival is back where it belongs. That was the message that came over loud and strong at The Tabernacle on 21 July when the programme for 2022 was announced.
Many forces have tried to push Carnival off the road – politicians, police, residents, safety ‘experts’, to name a few – but in the end it was the one we couldn’t see that reduced us to wining in front of a screen for two years running. A miserable little virus succeeded where shaven-headed bigots and grey-suited killjoys had failed. Now it’s Covid’s time to cry, as Carnival hits the road again in all its glorious feathered and fantastical extravagance.
But are our bodies ‘bacchanal ready’? Fete-starved and not exactly ‘Living la Vida Soca’, some of us have been out of practice and wondering how we’ll cope with hours on the road in real life. But trust me: once the big truck starts pumping out those soca beats, you’ll move… and keep on moving, come rain or shine, till the boys in blue say it’s time to shift our feet off the street!
