British audiences will have a chance to see the award-winning Saint Lucian film Shantaye’s World, which will be shown at four London cinemas this month.
The movie is set in England in the years following the Second World War England as Caribbean migrants arrive to help rebuild the war-ravaged country. The main protagonist, Shantaye, reaches England forlorn and heartbroken after her parents separate her forcibly from her teenage love in Saint Lucia. She must navigate her new surroundings with the hope of being reunited with the love of her life.
Iyanola Pictures and Kush Films will present the inaugural UK screening of the film on 14 October at Genesis Cinema, Mile End Road, at 6pm. On 15 October the film will be shown at the Rio, Dalston, at the earlier time of 3.45pm. The third viewing will be at Peckhamplex Cinema, in Peckham, on 24 October, starting at 6.30pm.
The Watermans Cinema, Brentford, hosts the final two screenings on 28 October at 7.30pm and on 29 October at 2pm. The film’s producer, Mathurine Emmanuel, is asking for financial assistance to attend the screenings and Q&A afterwards. She needs to raise £8,000 to pay for travel and accommodation for herself, the director and the film’s main star, Shantaye. Donations can be made at Go Fund Me.
