First celebrated in 2019 when Limin was based at Spitalfields, International Doubles Day (IDD) is back for its seventh year on Friday 30 May and promises to be a bigger, better and more vibrant than ever celebration of Trinidad’s most popular street food which consists of chana (spiced chickpeas) and two bara (flat breads), tailored to your taste. IDD is the creation of chef Sham Mahabir of LIMIN Southbank, who is on a mission to showcase Trinidadian cuisine and its rich cultural heritage.
Discussing International Doubles Day, Sham said: “Doubles can be found on every corner in Trinidad and Tobago – they’re part of our DNA. It’s been fascinating to see them growing in popularity here in the UK. When I arrived in this part of the world 27 years ago, I searched for them and failed miserably. Today, thanks to the work we do, they are one of our biggest sellers in LIMIN SOUTHBANK and we now have a menu dedicated to Doubles where you can get any type of filling you like from curried chicken and curried goat to masala fish.”
Sham continued: “By establishing International Doubles Day, it’s an opportunity to raise awareness about Trinidadian cuisine, its rich cultural heritage and the undiscovered food of the Caribbean. It reminds us that culinary gems are to be found in all corners of the world. In the Trinidad and Tobago national anthem the line “here every creed and race finds an equal place”, words which I feel are brought to life in the queue for doubles. Once you try Doubles, you’ll understand why they deserve a full day each year dedicated to celebrating them”.
So pop down to Limin this Friday – Sunday at Gabriel’s Wharf, 56 Upper Ground, London, SE1 9PP, where doubles are 50% off. For further information, see limin.co.uk or @southbank.limin.
