As Black History Month in the UK nears its end, the message of “Standing Firm in Power and Pride” continues to resonate. The 2025 theme celebrates leadership, cultural identity, and resilience, recognising the achievements of Black communities and their ongoing influence across society.
Throughout October, events and exhibitions across the country have showcased art, music, and stories that influenced Black British culture. The Outernet Exhibition: Carnival Through the Lens of Ian Watts, running from 2 to 31 October at Outernet London, presents photographs from Notting Hill Carnival spanning the 1980s to 2000s. Supported by BlackMale Beats, the exhibition captures carnival life over the years.
Black History Month activities extend into November. On Monday 3 November, the programme features Nigeria’s Story: Beat of the West. Later in the week, on Friday 7 November, Clarence Hall will screen Frederick Douglass: My Path to Freedom, featuring Devarnie Lothian. The play Mama Afrika will also be staged in multiple theatres from 6 to 29 November.
As the month closes, the focus remains on learning, honouring, and celebrating Black excellence, not just in October, but all year round. Check out our Black History Month events for more information.
