Derby will burst into colour and rhythm this summer as the city gears up for two standout celebrations of Caribbean culture.
First up is a dazzling display of costume design at Derby Theatre on Saturday 28 June, where designers from across the East Midlands will compete in the EMCCAN Regional Carnival Costume Competition. The theme — “Re-imagining Carnival Culture” — invites creatives to blend traditional elements with bold, modern twists. Expect dramatic feathers, glittering headpieces, and a strong sense of heritage reimagined for today’s generation.
The real party, though, kicks off on Sunday 20 July, when the Derby Caribbean Carnival marks its 50th anniversary. What began as a small community celebration half a century ago has grown into one of Derby’s most anticipated cultural events. A lively procession of masqueraders will wind through the city, ending at Osmaston Park, where festival vibes take over: music, food, dance, funfair rides, and a headline international artist.
For Derby’s Caribbean community, and the city as a whole, it’s more than a party — it’s a proud expression of identity, history, and joy. Interested persons can purchase their ticket online at Derby Theatre.
