Eighty songs have progressed to the quarterfinal stage of the 2025 Groovy and Power Soca Monarch competitions, a major highlight of the Lucian Carnival season.
A total of 118 songs were submitted by artists from across Saint Lucia, all aiming to dethrone current monarchs, Sly in the Groovy category and Ricky T in the Power category. In response to the open call for submissions, artists delivered a diverse mix of songs, reflecting the creativity and energy of this year’s carnival season.
Judging took place over two days, on Saturday 31 May and Sunday 1 June. A panel of music industry professionals conducted listening sessions and selected the top 40 songs in each category. These 80 qualifying entries were chosen purely on merit. This marks an impressive 100% increase from the previous year, when only 40 songs, 20 in each category, advanced to the quarterfinals.
In the next phase of the competition, the 40 qualifying artists in each category will perform their submitted songs live before a judging panel. From this, 20 semi-finalists will be chosen per category. The semi-final round is scheduled for Friday 27 June at the National Cultural Centre Grounds.
