On January 18 2026, Minister of Culture and Community Development Michelle Benjamin announced added support for senior cultural figures during a media briefing in Port of Spain. As part of that move, she presented
TT $50,000 (approximately £5,493) to Sherma Watkins, the wife of calypso singer Timothy Watkins, better known as Baron.

The funding will help with Baron’s medical care. He is currently living at a specialised facility that is aiding him with his health needs. Minister Benjamin said the assistance followed recent talks with Mrs Watkins and was arranged to give help during a difficult period.

The presentation was supported by the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation, led by president Ainsley King, and the National Carnival Commission of Trinidad and Tobago, represented by chairman Peter Khan.

Minister Benjamin explained that this support is not meant to be a one-time gesture. The Ministry of Culture and Community Development, along with the National Carnival Commission and other partners, plans to review the situation of older artists nationwide. The goal is to understand their needs and put systems in place to support them, especially in later years.

She said the country has a responsibility to care for those who helped shape its music and cultural life at home and abroad. Many of these artists represented Trinidad and Tobago on regional and international stages for decades.

The ministry said it will continue working to support cultural practitioners, ensure their well-being, and recognise their contributions, while taking steps to make sure their work and influence are respected and remembered in the years ahead.
