Soca crooner Kees Dieffenthaller was on hand to serenade nutritionist Dr Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted when she received the prestigious World Food Prize on 21 October.
Kees produced an electrifying performance for Dr Thilsted – an ardent lover of Kees’s band – in front of more than 800 attendees from 75 countries at the World Food Prize Laureate Awards Ceremony at the Iowa State Capitol Building in Des Moines, USA.
Dr Thilsted, a Trinbagonian with dual Danish citizenship, received the accolade in recognition of her “ground-breaking research, critical insights and landmark innovations in developing holistic, nutrition-sensitive approaches to aquaculture and food systems”.
Afterwards, the artiste commended Dr Thilsted for her outstanding contribution to global food research. He described the opportunity to celebrate a native of Trinidad while transporting their culture and music to the rest of the world as “pure joy”.
Dr Thilsted, a veteran of the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands and Fisheries in Tobago and the first and only woman to do so, is the Global Lead for Nutrition and Public Health at World Fish, a global research centre based in Malaysia.
