An exhibition celebrating the achievements of the African Caribbean community in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, will be held at the St. Albans Museum until 30 June. The display, titled Becoming Us, was launched on 16 February by two organisations: Active Lifestyles and Leeanna’s Wish.
The exhibition aims to inspire the next generation to achieve more than their predecessors and encourage an inclusive and diverse appreciation of shared history. Its primary focus is on 1948 – 1971, profoundly exploring themes such as Windrush and Arrival, Working Lives, Overcoming Adversity, African Caribbean Culture, Commercial Music, and Celebrating Achievements.
The exposition was launched on 16 February in a private event attended by the local community and dignitaries, including the St. Albans’ Mayor and several Councillors.
The exhibition boasts several immersive experiences, including an Indian Front Room reconstructed from the 1970s, complete with furniture and ornaments. Additionally, visitors can engage in family activities, listen to talks, and view a special portrait wall that contains photography.
Organisers of the exhibition feel that society needs to pay tribute to the thousands of Caribbean immigrants who settled all over the country and helped contribute to the growth of towns and cities. Shelley Hayles, Director of Leeanna’s Wish, feels that the contributions of Caribbean immigrants have made St. Albans a more vibrant and inclusive place. Her counterpart, Andrene McDonald, Chair of Active Lifestyles, thinks the display will help overcome certain stereotypes about the African Caribbean community.
Becoming Us is on at the St Albums Museum and runs from Friday 16 February – Sunday 30 June 2024.
