The world of Carnival has lost a true pioneer. Impresario and cultural advocate Sonny Blacks passed away at St Thomas’s Hospital, London, on Saturday morning, 19 July 2025.
Soca News understands that despite having been diagnosed with a serious health condition, Sonny was continuing to work on several projects, including a major celebration of steelpan next year. He had also started work on his autobiography.
In 1968, Sonny set up the Carnival Development Committee, the first official organising body for Notting Hill Carnival. Right up to his death, Sonny remained true to the culture he loved as an active member of the event’s Advisory Council.
Paying tribute to Sonny as a pioneer, promoter and mentor, Matthew Phillip, chief executive officer of Notting Hill Carnival, wrote: “May your legacy live on in every beat of the pan, every burst of colour in a costume and every moment of unity on the streets of Notting Hill.
“Your kind words of encouragement and support will never be forgotten. With deep gratitude and respect.”
Soca News will run a full appreciation of Sonny Blacks in due course. In the meantime, we convey our sincere condolences to his family.
