Bajan beauty entrepreneur and music icon Rihanna (Robyn Fenty) has now officially been named a national treasure in her home country of Barbados. On behalf of the newly minted republic, Prime Minister Mia Mottley declared the Diamonds songstress as the newest national hero and urged her to continue to shine like a diamond and to bring honour to her nation by her works and actions.
Speaking on Monday 29 November 2021, the eve of the independence day celebrations which also marked the official transition to a republic, Mottley commended the artist for pushing barriers by inspiring “the imagination of the world through the pursuit of excellence with her creativity, her discipline, and above all else, her extraordinary commitment to the land of her birth”.
Rihanna is only the eleventh person to receive the National Hero of Barbados honour, and the second woman to hold the title; the first is Sarah Ann Gill.
Rihanna may now be addressed as ‘Her Excellency Robyn Rihanna Fenty’.
