The Swiss Soca Festival, a brand new addition to the Soca Weekenders in 2017, is building on last year’s success with bigger venues for 2018. Over the weekend of 7-9 September, the activities are evenly split between the cities of Zurich (on Friday) and Lucerne (on Saturday). An exciting schedule includes a boat ride, one outdoor and two indoor fetes with live shows, a silent party and a BBQ lime.
This year offers live performances by Shurwayne Winchester (Trinidad), Fadda Fox (Barbados), Scrappy (Montserrat) and Zamoni (Antigua). The founders of the festival, resident DJ Iray and Soca Junkie Christina Jicuo from the Swiss Soca Crew, will be joined by a host of others such as DJ Legend Barney Millah from Berlin and DJ Mack from Paris to fire up Switzerland with the sounds of soca, afrobeats, reggae and dancehall.
The Swiss Soca Festival is a fun, accessible and affordable Festival that has all the ingredients to become a favourite on the Soca Festival calendar.
The introduction of soca to Switzerland is less surprising than it might seem. The country has its own deep tradition of European-style Carnival and has become a centre for steelpan playing and manufacture on the Continent.
