Released Date

Alison Hinds, soca artist, actor-activist and Barbadian cultural ambassador, is set to be amongst 14 distinguished individuals to be recognised with honorary degrees by the University of the West Indies (UWI) during its Class of 2023 graduation ceremonies. This prestigious tradition coincides with the university’s 75th jubilee celebrations, adding a special significance to the event.

Alison has had an impressive career since she came on the scene. At just 17, she became the lead vocalist for the award-winning band Square One, achieving chart-topping success with hits like Ragamuffin, Aye Aye Aye, and Faluma. Her international breakthrough came with the hit song Roll It Gal, which reached #52 on the Billboard R&B charts in 2006 and featured prominently in Hollywood productions, including Grey’s Anatomy.

Beyond her music career, Alison Hinds is a dedicated advocate for causes like AIDS awareness, women’s rights, diabetes, cancer foundations, and organisations supporting disabled and physically challenged children. Her exceptional contributions have earned her recognition, including being named a Caribbean International Federation of Business and Professional Women Goodwill Ambassador in 2014 and joining Rihanna as Barbados Cultural Ambassador.

Alison Hinds will be receiving her honorary degree on October 21. The ceremonies will happen across five locations: Cave Hill, St Augustine, Mona, and Global (formerly Open Campus).
