Barbadian sporting legend Sir Garfield Sobers has died at the age of 89 on Friday 17 July, prompting tributes from across the region and the international sporting community.
Known worldwide as one of cricket’s greatest players, Sir Garry became a symbol of excellence and achievement for Barbados and the wider Caribbean. During an international career spanning two decades, from 1954 to 1974, he established himself as one of the sport’s most accomplished all-rounders.
Born in Bridgetown on 28 July 1936, Sobers played 93 Test matches for the West Indies and set numerous records throughout his career. His unbeaten 365 against Pakistan in 1958 remained the highest individual score in Test cricket for more than 30 years. In 1968, he also became the first player to hit six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket.
His achievements earned him worldwide recognition. Knighted in 1975 for services to cricket, he was later named a National Hero of Barbados, one of the country’s highest honours.
Beyond his sporting accomplishments, Sir Garfield was admired as an ambassador for Barbados and the Caribbean, inspiring generations with his talent, humility and success on the world stage.
His passing marks the end of an era for regional sport, but his legacy as one of the Caribbean’s most influential and celebrated figures will endure for generations to come.
