Southside Harmonics was formed in 1979 allowing a platform for people to carry on and develop the skills they had learnt in school. Formed from various schools in south London, with the majority of children coming from areas within the London Borough of Lambeth. Today Southside Harmonics has established itself as one of Europe’s premier Steel Orchestras providing weekly music and arts sessions to young people in the community, allowing them access to performances, tours, concerts and competitions, whilst learning music theory, team building and confidence skills, time keeping, discipline and various other life skills, whilst making a positive contribution to their community. Southside has also carried out a number of workshops and classes for disabled children as well as children with behavioural issues and various other disabilities. Noted for its work in the community and excellence in carnival arts, Southside has continued to be in the forefront of steelband music with its exuberant and vibrant performances, allowing hundreds of thousands of consumers to enjoy the energy of Southside. Tens of thousands of consumers see Southside perform throughout the year, performing for dignitaries such as Nelson Mandela, HRH Princess Anne, HRH Princess Margaret, The Lord Mayor, Iain Botham, Mick Jaeger and Ainsley Harriet. Venues have included Hilton Hotels, Savoy Hotel, Dorchester Hotel, Alexandra Palace, Eltham Palace, O2 Scrum on the beach as well as appearances on BBC1, ITV and the - to name a few. Southside has been Champions of Nottinghill’s ‘The Best Steelband on the Road’competition, five times. Southside annually takes part in the Notting Hill Carnival – one of the world’s biggest street festivals. Whether a garden party, wedding, festival / carnival or any corporate event Southside is sure to provide just the right atmosphere for your event with its extensive repoitore of Pop, Ballads Reggae Calypso and Bossa nova classics.
