Released Date

Antigua Carnival, which was to have been held on Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 August, has been cancelled. Billing itself as the Caribbean’s Greatest Summer Festival, the carnival was officially cancelled by the Hon Daryll S Matthew, minister for sports, culture, national festivals and the arts.

In a letter dated 19 April, the minister said that cabinet had accepted his recommendation to cancel Carnival 2020. He added: “Also contributing to the cancellation of the festivities is the strong belief that the public will have no interest in attending social and entertainment gatherings during and after the Covid-19 pandemic.”

He also revealed that an Independence Day schedule for 2020 will be revealed once there is official confirmation that the Covid-19 pandemic had subsided. Antigua’s Independence Day falls on 1 November.
