On her first-ever performance in Trinidad, Grenadian singer Sabrina Francis made a remarkable and impressionable debut at the Big Black Box on Saturday 25 May.
Sabrina is an Afro-Caribbean pop artist who has gained international recognition through tours in the UK and other countries. Eager to share her music with Trinidad, she performed an acoustic set with four members of her Treehouse band. The night was opened by fellow Grenadian artist Laura Lisa, setting a warm tone for Sabrina’s performance.
Before the show, Sabrina expressed her hopes for her music’s longevity, saying, “I want my music to be sustainable, building a solid fanbase and writing impactful songs so that in 20 years, I can still perform for those touched by my music.”
Her love for Afro-Caribbean music grew naturally, and it can be traced to her deep connection with traditional African and Caribbean folk music and a life-changing trip to South Africa in 2019, where she collaborated with musicians like Young Mbazo and Frank Mavhimira.
In Trinidad, Sabrina aims to build her Caribbean fanbase as she believes “having support from your own region is powerful. I sense a growing openness to different music styles among Caribbean people.”
Elegantly dressed, Sabrina captivated the audience with her confidence and heartfelt songs like Magical Life, Overflow, and Mama Say, all inspired by personal experiences.
Throughout her performance, Sabrina showcased the versatility of Caribbean music, hoping for more regional support to promote and sustain the Afro-Caribbean sound.
