Chef Dom Taylor was crowned winner of Channel 4 and Netflix Five Star Kitchen in July 2023, and his exceptional prize enabled him to open his first-ever restaurant, The Good Front Room, in London’s exclusive Langham Hotel.
Initially, his tenure in the hotel’s Palm Court was due to end in December. However, due to the popularity of his unique cooking style that combines influences from his Saint Lucian and Jamaican heritage and south London upbringing, the hotel announced it will be open for dinner seven days a week from 13 November 2023 to 30 April 2024.
The restaurant’s name is inspired by Dom’s great aunt, Myrtle; the concept of an exclusive room always immaculately set up to receive ‘very special guests’ will resonate with all UK-based Caribbean people of a certain age.
Soca News visited in August and were instantly enticed from the moment we arrived at the Langham Hotel and were greeted by the doormen in their top hats. I purposely took my time to admire the sheer luxury of the reception area with its extravagant chandeliers and imported artwork from Japan. Then, on entering the Palm Court, it was the bold, vibrant colours of Caroline Chinakwe’s pieces, which merge pop culture images with a touch of Afrofuturism, that had me out of my seat indulging in a contemporary Black art experience, ahead of considering the menu options.
The staff made us feel fussed over, pampered and very special guests. The food exceeded all my expectations as its subtle flavours tantalised my taste buds.
Dom Taylor creating time to greet guests and ask for their opinion on his food was the icing on the cake for what I would describe as a ‘must try’, unforgettable dining experience. To book your experience, visit langhamhotels.com.
