Soca continues its global journey with the release of Best of Japanese Soca, a landmark compilation curated and produced by Selector HEMO, the pioneering female DJ credited with introducing soca music to Japan. Released on Saturday 6 September 2025 via LIME Records, the album stands as both a celebration of carnival rhythm and a powerful document of cultural exchange between the Caribbean and Japan.
Widely recognised as the driving force behind Japan’s soca movement, Selector HEMO began her musical journey through DJ culture before dedicating herself to spreading the sound and spirit of soca. Over the years, she has played a central role in nurturing Japan’s carnival scene, connecting Caribbean traditions with Japanese festivals, dance culture and club life. Her work has helped establish soca as a vibrant and growing genre within Japan’s diverse music landscape.
Best of Japanese Soca brings together 12 carefully selected tracks drawn from works HEMO has produced, created or performed. Far more than a retrospective, the compilation captures the authentic energy of soca as it has evolved in Japan, from Tokyo nightclubs to street celebrations and festivals such as the Yosakoi Festival in Kochi. Each track reflects a genuine attempt to honour the roots of Caribbean carnival while allowing local creativity to flourish.
Described as “more than a best of”, the project serves as a musical record of people and moments that have helped bridge Japan and the Caribbean through rhythm, movement and shared celebration.
