The global steelpan community is in mourning following the passing of Sterling Betancourt MBE, revered founder of Nostalgia Steelband, who died at the age of 96.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the development and international spread of the steelpan, Betancourt leaves behind an extraordinary legacy as a pannist, innovator and cultural ambassador. His contribution to the art form helped shape generations of musicians both in Trinidad and Tobago and across the diaspora.

It is understood that Betancourt had been in reflective spirits in recent days, sharing memories spanning his remarkable life, including early travels and performances that helped take pan to new audiences around the world.

His passing comes just weeks before scheduled TASPO commemorative events, which were expected to honour his role as one of the movement’s pioneering figures. Organisers have confirmed that upcoming celebrations will now serve as a tribute to his life and enduring impact.

Nostalgia Steelband is expected to announce plans to honour their founding father in the coming days.

Betancourt’s legacy will continue to resonate through the global pan fraternity.
