New Beacon Books will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2026, marking its launch in London in 1966. As Britain’s first Black publishing house and specialist bookshop, it opened doors for authors, thinkers, and communities at a time when few platforms existed.
The milestone comes as independent radical bookshops deal with higher costs and tighter conditions. The directors say the anniversary year provides an opportunity to look back on the challenges faced and the books produced over the years.
Planned activities in 2026 include events and publications that explore New Beacon Books’ role in cultural and political life. The programme will revisit its links to the Caribbean Artists Movement, supplementary schools, youth groups, justice campaigns, and related work. The public is invited to join the celebrations throughout the year.
