Today (22 June), Windrush Day is being marked across the UK, commemorating the arrival of the MV Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks in 1948. The ship carried passengers from the Caribbean who responded to Britain’s call to help rebuild the country after World War II, marking the start of a transformative era in British history.
The Windrush generation made an indelible impact, helping to shape modern Britain through their contributions to public services, industry and culture. From music and food to language and community life, their influence remains deeply rooted. Despite facing discrimination and hardship, their resilience paved the way for future generations.
Today’s celebrations bring communities together to honour that legacy through events, education and cultural showcases taking place nationwide.
