Soca, Rum and some Bajan sun comes to South Molton Street

|

Released Date

South Molton Street, near classy Bond Street in W1, will come alive this weekend with a Taste Of Barbados.

This three-day extravaganza runs from today, Friday 5 May, until Sunday 7 May. It’s a true celebration of Barbadian culture, cuisine, music, art and of course rum. The aim is to whet your appetite for the Caribbean flavours you can experience at Barbados’ famous Crop Over in July and August or the Food and Rum Festival in November.

Cheryl Carter, UK director of Barbados Tourism Marketing, which is hosting this event, says: “Our island is a treasure trove of wonderful and very diverse events and activities which cater to all ages. Taste Of Barbados is a special event designed to not only showcase our local culture and gastronomy but also to give potential UK visitors an insight into some of our exciting upcoming events on the island.”

Demonstrating their skills with once-tasted-never-forgotten Bajan cuisine will be Barbadian chefs Jason Howard and Anthony Cumberbatch, and you can check out the cookery demonstrations for tips on re-creating those Caribbean flavours at home.

You can’t talk about the Caribbean with mentioning rum. Mount Gay is one of the oldest brands in the world and is pretty much synonymous with Barbados. Miguel Smith will give a masterclass, leading us through the Mount Gay heritage, while Global Rum Ambassador Ian Burrell will be presenting mixology classes. It looks like being a heady three days for rum connoisseurs.

As for Bajan music, there will be enough to satisfy every taste, from calypso and spouge to contemporary folk, jazz and reggae. Taste of Barbados has lined up some of the country’s hottest acts, including Arturo Tappin & Band, DJ Cool Breeze, a Barbadian folk choir, calypsonian Red Plastic Bag, Biggie Irie, Nikkita, Tamara Marshall and Marissa Lindsay.

There will also be daily competitions, including the chance to win holidays with flights and accommodation, dance classes, children’s activities and an opportunity to try out a British Airways flight simulator – so get there early if you want to try out your landing skills at Grantley Adams International!
