This year’s Guyana Folk Festival will be extra special, scheduled for the same day as Guyana’s 58th Independence Day, Sunday 26 May. Held at Oasis Academy in Croydon and organised by Guyana UK Social Development Association (GUSDA), it is a day that encourages everyone (especially Guyanese families and friends) to celebrate the best of Guyanese heritage, culture, music and entertainment.
Prepare your taste buds for a journey down memory lane with a wide variety of traditional food and drinks such as pepper pot, curry and roti, cook-up rice, pine tarts, cassava pone, mauby and homemade ginger beer, all available for sale.
First held in 2008, past performers have included GUSDA’s Patron and Guyanese icon Ram John Holder (aka Pork Pie), flautist Keith Waithe, actress Doris Harper-Wills, and poet Marc Matthews. The event has also had special performances from US and Guyanese-based artist Terry Gajraj, Big Red, Jumo Primo (former lead singer of the world-famous Byron Lee & the Dragonaires), and Comedienne Liza Singh & Stitchie One Man Band, among others.
GUSDA endeavours to lend its support in the areas of education, culture, sport, and health, including mental health and general well-being; with our main focus being primarily on children, young people, and the elderly.
Keep an eye on GUSDA’s website for full details of all events, including this year’s Family Sports and Fun Day, which will be on Sunday 28 July at Croydon Sports Arena.
