The Queen of Soca herself, Alison Hinds, is replacing Wyclef Jean on Saturday 28 July as part of the Rotterdam Unlimited five-day festival. After Wyclef unexpectedly had to cancel his entire European tour, organisers Ducos Productions and Mojo Concerts are happy to welcome one of the world’s best-known soca stars to Rotterdam. Mojo Concerts stage 150 shows annually, hosting performers like Beyonce and Ed Sheeran. The outdoor stage show at Hofplein, a square in Rotterdam’s city centre, will harness the energy of the day’s colourful street parade and bring the city’s annual Zomercarnaval to a close with a bang.
Since Alison Hinds burst onto the soca scene in 1996 with Raggamuffin as the lead singer of band Square One, she’s thrilled soca lovers with a string of hits in both her solo career and as a member of the band – and she’s still going strong over two decades later. With powerful yet sweet vocals that have worked equally well in her reggae and dancehall collaborations with Shaggy, Richie Spice, Jah Cure and recently Mr.Vegas, the Zomercarnaval audience is in for a real treat.
A seasoned veteran of the stage, and a winner of numerous awards, Hinds shows no sign of slowing down. Luckily for her global fans, she leaves her home of Barbados on a regular basis to tour the world and perform at many of the Caribbean carnivals. Well-loved classics like Faluma and Roll it Gal and the latest output of tunes for 2018, Pull Up, Shellings and Famalay, are part of a body of work of 40 singles; a wealth of material to choose from, to deliver to the Rotterdam crowd with her signature power, energy and flair.
