Dame Sandra Prunella Mason, President of Barbados

Barbados’s 57th Independence and Second Anniversary as a Republic

|

Today, Barbados celebrates 57 years of independence and its second anniversary as a republic after electing its first president, Dame Sandra Prunella Mason, GCMG, DA, KC, who replaced the late Queen Elizabeth II, as head of state in November 2021.

Since it gained Republican status, the island has been setting itself to acquire a new constitution. In June 2022, a 10-member Constitutional Review Commission was formed and sworn in by acting President Jeffrey Gibson in the absence of President Mason to draft and set out a new constitution for the new republic, which will be finalised by the end of 2024 within an 18-month deadline.

Last year, the island commemorated the independence celebration with many events that lasted the entire November leading up to the day of Independence, including a National Independence Thanksgiving Service, a Ceremonial Parade and Independence Honours Ceremony and the Independence Concert.
