Caribbean culture coming to the South Bank

|

If you take a leisurely stroll along London’s South Bank heading past the London Eye, Royal Festival Hall and the National Theatre, just before you get to the Oxo Tower, at Gabriel’s Wharf, you’ll find a brand new riverside attraction showcasing Caribbean culture. Following on from last year’s sensational pop-up success at Spitalfield’s with Limin’, the organisers have chosen Gabriel’s Wharf as the permanent location for Limin’ Beach Club.

With features that include palm trees, a sand area, veranda and a rum bar, the Limin’ crew will be aiming to create the ultimate family-friendly Caribbean summer experience all the way through to September. From October, it will revert to the Limin’ restaurant format. The evolving menu will initially offer customers BBQ Caribbean cuisine with drinks and music.

The news will come as welcome relief in a year in which we have all been living under Covid-19 restrictions and seen the cancellation of festivals worldwide ‑ including Notting Hill Carnival, of course. As we begin the journey out of Lockdown all eyes will be on the hospitality industry to see how they manage the challenge of adapting to the government guidelines on social distancing while enticing the public to come out again with confidence.

Limin’ Beach Club will be looking to London’s Caribbean community to support them as they embark on these brave new steps. The launch weekend on Saturday 4 July will be split into three sessions of 2½ hours each, with the first starting at 2pm with the last one ending at 11.30pm. Included in the inclusive food and drink price will be an exclusive souvenir goody bag with a water bottle, bandana and a pair of sunglasses.

Despite all the challenges, owner Sham Mahabir and his team have remained positive and passionate throughout: “It’s been months of negotiations, laughter, tears and, yes, Covid-19. But we did it and we are even more proud as we have been told it is the first Caribbean-owned restaurant on the South Bank. I’m beyond excited to have you all on this journey. Now, let’s get the South Bank rocking with Caribbean vibes!”
