The Derby West Indian Community Association is preparing to mark a major milestone this summer. Two special events are planned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Derby Caribbean Carnival.

The first of these events is the EMCCAN Regional Carnival Costume Competition at Derby Theatre on Saturday 28 June. Organised in partnership with the East Midlands Caribbean Carnival Arts Network (EMCCAN), the evening will feature costume presentations under the theme Re-imagine Carnival Culture. Designers will compete in categories such as King, Queen, Prince and Princess, blending tradition with fresh, contemporary ideas. The night will also include steel pan music and dance performances.

Donna Briscoe-Greene, CEO of EMCCAN, said the event offers a platform to highlight the creativity and talent within Caribbean communities across the region.

The main Carnival event follows on Sunday 20 July, when troupes across the UK will take to the streets for a colourful city-centre procession. The parade will end at Osmaston Park, which will be transformed into a festival site with live music, a stage show featuring an international headline artist, food stalls, a funfair, and arts and crafts.

The Carnival, which began in 1975, has become a major cultural event for the city. It is organised by the Derby West Indian Community Association (DWICA), a charity that has supported local communities for over 70 years.

Chairman George Mighty said community and business support remains vital to the success of the Carnival. “For 50 years, the Derby Caribbean Carnival has been a vibrant expression of our heritage. We invite businesses to join us in this celebration and help us create a lasting legacy for future generations.”

Tickets for both events are now available. For details or to explore partnership opportunities, contact: [email protected] or via phone +44(0)1332 371592.
