General Grant, a Trinidad and Tobago dancehall veteran, has a career spanning more than four decades and made it to the billboard charts in 1993 with his single D Shot Call and a new single, Nothing To Something.
The artist, whilst speaking on his newly released track, commented that, unlike some of his colleagues, he wants to receive recognition for his contribution to his country now – and not when he has no need of it. He wants all his flowers while he is still here to smell them.
The single Nothing To Something focuses on elevation and trusting one’s progress. On it, Grant says, “Elevation is the key in life no matter how long it takes. This song is motivation. Where there is a will, there is a way. Believe in yourself. Don’t doubt yourself. We can all go from nothing to something.”
The song was written by Grant, but he commended Farmer Nappy for helping him on the path to its creation; they met on a flight, and Farmer’s input led New York-based Grant to finish the song on time for production by Andrew Denny, in Barbados.
As to why artists are great representatives of their countries, Grant said, “Politicians do not make Trinidad what it is. Artistes and creatives make Trinidad what it is. The people make Trinidad and Tobago; Everything that we are – the way we eat, the way we lime, the way we fete and treat people, that’s what we sell to the world and that’s the energy we must always share with others.”
Nothing To Something was released this January, and is available on YouTube.
