Grenada Tourism Authority introduces new fees to support sustainable tourism

|

Released Date

The Grenada Tourism Authority (GTA), in line with the island’s continued dedication to promoting sustainable tourism without reneging on the goal of making visitors’ experience worthwhile, has initiated a phased user fee structure for the Molinere/Beauséjour Marine Protected Area (MPA), home to the world’s first underwater sculpture park.

Over the last three years, Grenada’s tourism industry has recorded 26 consecutive months of growth, including a 20% increase in the number of visitors it received prior to the Covid-19 era.

To sustain this feat, GTA has also introduced significant upgrades at the MPA, including the addition of 29 new sculptures, two sculpture replacements, 19 moorings for safer access, an 8-seat underwater wedding chapel, and a GRENADA sign at Grand Mal. Also included in this new initiative are daily patrols to protect marine biodiversity, enforce environmental regulations and maintain the pristine waters.

The implementation of these user fees will begin with the payment of a nominal user fee for entry to the MPA as follows:

15 May 2025 – US$3.50 per person, per visit

1 October 2026 – US$7.00 per person, per visit

1 October 2027 – US$10.00 per person, per visit

To facilitate amendments to the Fisheries Act, new fees will also apply to various marine activities, including overnight yacht charters, permits to use a yacht buoy or mooring, scuba diving, and snorkelling.

Randall Dolland, Chairman of the GTA, thanked Grenada tourism stakeholders, saying, “We appreciate the continued support of our tourism stakeholders as we work to maintain and enhance the natural beauty that makes Grenada a unique and sought-after destination. By investing in our tourism assets today, we are securing a vibrant and sustainable future for generations to come.”

The introduction of user fees will encourage a cycle of reinvestment to upgrade the MPA’s capacity and offerings, as well as Grenada’s marine tourism sector as a whole. This would ensure the islands’ natural resources continue to attract visitors from all over the globe while supporting long-term environmental conservation and the local community’s economy.

The entry fees apply to all categories of visitors to Molinere/Beauséjour Marine Protected Area (MPA) and can be paid directly via the Pure Grenada Payment Portal.
