Indira Ampiot, hailing from Guadeloupe, has been crowned Miss France 2023.
The 18-year-old communications student from Basse Terre was chosen partly by a seven-strong jury and partly by viewers of the TF1 TV channel, which broadcast the final at Châteauroux on Saturday 17 December. She dedicated her victory to her late grandmother and added that she would devote her year to supporting women with cancer.
Indira is the fourth candidate from Guadeloupe to have won the national competition since it began in 1920 (in those days it was called ‘La Plus Belle Femme de France’). The Caribbean island previously provided winners in 1992, 2002 and 2019. The other French islands – Martinique, St Barthélemy and St Martin – have been less successful, but in 2017 the Miss France crown went to Alicia Aylies from Guyane (French Guiana). In 1976 and 2008 the winner’s sash was placed on candidates from the Indian Ocean island of Réunion.
Among the other prizes and perks that come with the title, Indira, as the new reigning monarch of French beauty, will have the use of a rent-free apartment in Paris.
