Performer at Hackney Carnival in 2018

Hackney Carnival will return in September after five-year hiatus

|

Released Date

We have not experienced the joy of an in-person Hackney Carnival for five years and are glad to welcome it back. After a long hiatus, the celebration of Caribbean culture will return to the streets of Hackney on Sunday 22 September.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the carnival took on a virtual format in 2020 and 2021 but was cancelled in 2022 because of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. In 2023, the council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Councillor Chris Kennedy, issued a statement saying a full Hackney Carnival will return in 2024 and biannually thereafter due to budget issues as the carnival has increased in popularity and an expanding attendance.

Under the guidance of returning artistic director Pax Nindi, the street parade will feature Hackney’s legacy carnival groups. The parade promises to be a visual delight, with captivating floats and colourful costumes showcasing a rich diversity of culture.
