Impatient for Carnival Monday in London? It’s sooner than you think – if you’re a child!
The Notting Hill Nursery Carnival has been organised for many years now by the Children and Parents’ Carnival Association (CAPCA) and it returns to Kensington Memorial Park on Monday 13 August.
The theme this year is Fancy Sailor, and young carnivalists (with help from their parents/carers) are invited to create their own fancy sailor costume and wear it to the event. CAPCA advises it should be bright, colourful and fun, and decorated with ribbons, medals and braiding. You can accessorise it with a suitably decorated headpiece, which traditionally was made of papier mâché painted with birds, plants and animals. Have a look here www.traditionalmas.com/project/sailor/ for some inspiration. Another option for the costume is a creature from under the sea.
Among the attractions on the day are a carnival costume parade, kings and queens competition and a junior steelband contest. Other activities include a glamorous mother and baby competition, a senior best carnival hat competition and a baby dry derby. Local nurseries and playgroups have the chance to win prizes.
