Nailah Blackman is still reeling from the success of this year’s staging of her Sokah Origins event. In its fourth year, the fete – themed Sokahchella – featured some of the region’s most talented voices.
Among the performers were Skinny Banton from Grenada, Antiguan Ricardo Drue, Father Philis, who represented Barbados with his wicked waistline, Teddyson John from Saint Lucia, who impressed the energetic crowd with his smooth vocals, and Tee Jay from Jamaica.
On the local front, event attendees were treated to performances by Olatunji, Shal Marshall, Dev, Choppi, College Boy Jesse, Rondo, Erphaan Alves, Sekon Sta, Viking Ding Dong, Preedy, Kernal Roberts, Ravi B, Yung Bredda, Tempa, Mical Teja and several others.
For many, one of the highlights of the evening was Nailah’s tribute to members of the soca and calypso fraternities who have transitioned. Her mother Abi Blackman briefly joined her on stage as she paid tribute to her grandfather, Ras Shorty I, who is credited with creating the soca genre. She also paid tribute to Explainer, Black Stalin and Blaxx.
Sokahchella 2023 was a musical extravaganza which left those in attendance impressed with Nailah’s versatility and vocal range. She also wowed the crowd with her dynamic costumes, which she had designed herself. There were collective gasps when she graced the stage in each of the four outfit changes.
Nailah took to social media to express her gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of her event. “NaiArmy, on behalf of Nailah Blackman and the entire SokahChella family, we wish to express our greatest gratitude to everyone who helped in bringing ORIGINS home…” she posted.
Plans are already afoot for Sokah Origins 2024.
