Martin Jay celebrates thirty-three years of broadcasting soca music

|

Martin Jay started the Caribbean Affair as a fresh-faced 19-year-old teenager on Choice FM in September 1990 and his show helped to change the landscape of soca music in the UK.

He skilfully used his platform to introduce his audience to a wide range of soca music from all over the Caribbean and to introduce them to the personality of the artists through regular interviews. David Rudder, Machel Montano, Sparrow and the Arrow, were just some of those who could be heard by those who regularly tuned in to his Sunday evening show.

He soon became a household name within the Caribbean community and as the UK Prince of Soca, his stock rose to a high in July 1997 as he became a co-presenter on Choice FM’s flagship breakfast show. He spent 14 amazing years waking up London with music, interviews, and laughter in his unique style.

When the Caribbean Affair ended on Choice FM after a remarkable 23 years, Martin soon found a new platform on Bakahanal Radio to continue his legendary show. Most recently Martin Jay has also become the trusted voice of Notting Hill Carnival as he presented several of their shows including the launch, Panorama and live broadcasts streamed to YouTube on both days of carnival 2023.

When Soca News asked Martin how he felt about his success to date, he said: “At 8.02 pm on Sunday 30th September 1990 Sparrow was heard singing “Let the music play”, I will keep on jamming until I can’t jam anymore, Soca is all I need.

Catch Martin each and every Sunday on Bakahnal Radio, from 12-2 pm.
