The UK government plans to create an official “Inventory of Living Heritage” to recognise and protect national cultural traditions. While the Notting Hill Carnival is not yet officially listed, it is a potential nominee.
This initiative follows the UK’s ratification of the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which requires member states to compile inventories of living heritage practices.
The inventory will cover various cultural expressions, including festivals, crafts, music, and social practices. Communities in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will be invited to nominate valued traditions.
Notting Hill Carnival is a vibrant annual celebration of Caribbean culture held in London. It demonstrates the type of living heritage that the inventory aims to preserve.
Nominations for the Inventory of Living Heritage are expected to open this summer. This will allow communities and individuals to submit traditions for official recognition and protection.
Notting Hill Carnival is held annually during the August bank holiday. This year, it will take place on Sunday 24 August for Children’s Day and Monday 25 August for Adults’ Day.
