Oxford the next stop for carnival arts conference

|

Plans are in hand to hold the next International Conference in Carnival Arts in Oxford next year. Until now, these conferences have been held every two years (except when Covid restrictions forced postponement in 2020) and always in London. Midway through this year’s conference, organiser Haroun Shah suggested moving to a yearly schedule, which was greeted with universal approval.

Work will now start on bringing together speakers and subjects for a conference at the beginning of July 2022.

The intended venue is Oxford Brookes University (formerly Oxford Polytechnic) in east Oxford. Brookes has been a strong supporter of the city’s popular Cowley Road Carnival, which takes place near the university’s main Headington campus. In common with many other carnivals and festivals around the world, Cowley Road Carnival lost two years to the Covid menace, but it’s confident of pedalling energetically into action on Sunday 3 July 2022. (Pedalling, because the sustainably focused carnival bans motorised vehicles from its parade.)

The preliminary plan, therefore, is for the conference to take place at Brookes on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 July. The carnival will be a fitting ‘las lap’ to the presentations and discussions.
