Veteran calypsonian Singing Sonia (Sonia Francis) has been crowned the 2025 National Calypso Queen after an intense competition featuring 18 talented performers. Her song The Weaker Sex impressed the judges, securing her victory at the Sunday 9 February competition at Queen’s Hall, Port of Spain.
This marks a triumphant victory for Singing Sonia, who last won the title over three decades ago, in 1992. Applauding her milestone achievement, Kalypso Revue described her performance as a well-deserved win.
Second place went to schoolteacher Kerine Williams-Figaro, also known as Tiny, with her song Bon Appetit, and third place went to Curlissa Charles-Mapp with The Original Super Woman.
Former calypso monarch Terri Lyons’ guest performance closed the show at around 8.30 pm with her 2025 single Ask Yuh Man.
The National Calypso Queen competition, organised by the National Women’s Action Committee (NWAC), showcased women’s contributions to calypso, solidifying the legacy of powerful female voices in the art form. The event also marked its 40th anniversary and is readying itself for another 40 years.
