Trinidadian steel band Siparia Deltones Orchestra recently released their new album, which was made in collaboration with the late South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela. The album, entitled Siparia to Soweto, was launched by Monk Music on 15 September and features 13 songs. Legendary soca musician Machel Montano was instrumental in the creation of the album, which promises to present the best of the steel pan jazz world.
Siparia Deltones was founded in 1962 by pan-player Ellis Knights, and since then has grown to be one of the most successful bands of its kind in Trinidad and Tobago and the rest of the world. Between 2012 and 2016, South African jazz musician Hugh Masekela collaborated with them to create the songs heard on this album. Siparia to Soweto, released posthumously after Masekela’s 2018 death, promises to honour the legendary musical talent.
