The Commonwealth of Dominica celebratres 41 years of Independence

|

Dominicans at home and abroad today celebrate the island’s independence from Britain on Friday 3 November, 1978. This year marks the 41st anniversary of Britain’s banner being lowered in yet another colony; Dominica’s flag, with its vivid background of green, its black, white and yellow cross and the inclusion of the country’s own unique purple parrot the Sisserou, replaced it.

Dominica is affectionately known as the ‘nature isle’, due to the extensive variety of animals, birds and plants, and its mountainous, verdant rain forests. With a river for every day of the year, the island is also distinctive for its geothermal hot springs, the most well known being the volcanically heated Boiling Lake.
