About Carnival
Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago is a dazzling showcase of colour, creativity, joy, and theatricality. The islands are currently preparing for this annual celebration, which draws thousands of visitors from around the world. In 2026, the festivities will climax on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th February 2026.
One of the highlights of Carnival is J'Ouvert—a term derived from the French jour ouvert, meaning "opening of the day." This marks the beginning of the street takeover, as revellers don themselves in mud, paint, and powder while "chipping" through the cool darkness of the early morning in their respective bands.
A defining feature of Carnival in this twin-island republic is its power to bring people together. Its unifying revelry transcends economic, ethnic, and social barriers, fostering a sense of togetherness and community spirit.
