Happy Independence Day, Grenada!

|

Released Date

Grenada celebrates Independence Day on February 7 each year to symbolise its freedom from Britain in 1974. In 2026 the country turns 52 years old. The day is a public holiday with parades, national ceremonies, and community gatherings.

Before European rule, indigenous peoples lived on the island. France and Britain later fought for control, and Britain governed Grenada for many years. The island became an associated state in 1967 and achieved full independence in 1974 with Eric Gairy as its first prime minister. The years that followed brought political tensions, including a coup in 1979 and a U.S. intervention in 1983. Grenada later returned to democratic elections and has enjoyed steady government since then.

Soca News wishes the people of Grenada a joyful and proud Independence Day celebration.
