MOBO Founder Kanya King Dies Aged 57, Leaving Lasting Legacy in British Music

|

Released Date

The MOBO Organisation has announced the passing of its founder and CEO, Kanya King CBE, who died peacefully on 3 June 2026 following a battle with colon cancer.

A trailblazer in British music, King founded the MOBO Awards 30 years ago after remortgaging her home to create a platform for Black music, at a time when the industry claimed there was no market. Her vision quickly reshaped the cultural landscape, providing vital exposure for artists including Stormzy, Little Simz, Central Cee, Ms. Dynamite and Craig David.

More than an awards show, MOBO became a powerful force for cultural recognition and change, reaching audiences worldwide and influencing generations.

King, who received a CBE and an Ivors Academy Honour in 2025, remained determined throughout her illness.

The 2026 MOBO Awards, marking the organisation’s 30th anniversary, will be dedicated to her memory.
